ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt. Error 0x0000098 when booting up Vista

I foolishly accepted the Windows updates this morning and now i am getting this Windows Boot Manager message:

Windows failed to start.  A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.  To fix the problem:
        1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
        2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next".
        3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disk, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

      File : ntoskrnl.exe

      Status : 0x0000098

Info : Windows failed to load because a required file is missing, or corrupt.

I have tried repairing using a vista repair disk but it says it cannot repair this problem. I have tried uninstalling the update via the repair command prompt using pkgmgr.exe but nothing appears to happen. Even copying a version of the file from an earlier update does nothing. Tried system restore but claims there are no restore points.

Help!!!!

Hopefully this will help you as I have herd of it helping others:

Close all applications running and shut down Norton Anti Virus.
Disconnect all USB except your mouse it if is USB.
Download the stand alone 5 language SP1 version from Microsoft.com.
Boot with the Vista OS CD and do a repair search for "How to automatically repair Windows Vista using the Start Up Repair".
Run the downloaded SP1
It should go through the following:
Long time to load (green bar)
Installing Stage 1 of 3
Installing Stage 2 of 3
RESTARTS
Installing Stage 3 of 3
CONFIGURING UPDATES
THEN AGAIN:
Installing Stage 1 of 3
Installing Stage 2 of 3
RESTARTS
Installing Stage 3 of 3
RESTARTS
CONFIGURING UPDATES
Finally it starts up with the Vista Screen Saver - hit any key and log on.
Now re-connect all USB and re-start any programs.

Hope this helps.

boot to the vista recovery disk. once inside select the advanced options to repair your computer. select cmd prompt run "chkdsk /r" without the quotes to repair your computer. you can also try "sfc /scannow" and "fixboot" "fixmbr" I would use "chkdsk /r" first. let me know how this worked.

Thanks, I tried chkdsk /r and get "An unspecified error occured"  sfc /scannow returns "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." I don't have fixboot or fixmbr on my system.

I also tried the standalone vista sp1 install but this has an error about sqmapi.dll was not found.

I have received this same error each time the windows update has run and rebooted. About 4 times since I have been on Vista B. I solved it by unplugging a USB drive from the system and continuing. I have never had to repair Vista Business. Hopefully I haven't spoken too soon. This happen no matter which USB drive I had connected.
