A record or CNAME for www?

My web hosting company created the following DNS records:

mydomain.com            A            10.11.12.13
mail.mydomain.com            CNAME            mydomain.com
www.mydomain.com            CNAME            mydomain.com
ftp.mydomain.com            CNAME            mydomain.com
sandbox.mydomain.com            A            10.11.12.13
www.sandbox.mydomain.com      A            10.11.12.13

I don't understand why www is using a CNAME and the sub domain is not.

Should I let them change www.mydomain.com to an A record?

Or should the sub domain be changed to a CNAME.

I heard that CNAME requires 2 queries and takes more time.

I understand that both resolve to the same IP, but which one should I use and why?

Is it in the above scenario a good idea to change www to an A record? Why?
