Backup Fails: Final error: 0xa0008703

Windows server 2003
Veritas Backup Exec 9.1
Dell Poweredge 2600
4mm 20/40 GB drive/ tapes

**** Recent installation  of Symantec Endpoint solution 11.  *****

Our backups stopped working witherror: Final error: 0xa0008703.
If I run a TEST backup of our backup job, it fails as well.

I have tried a new tape.
I have stopped and restarted Backup Exec services.
I have shutdown and resatrted our server.
I have tried multiple TestRuns of our backup job, even reducing the amount of data to be backed up. Our data files size is just over 20GB.  I have select to use H/W or S/W compression if needed.
ALL tests were unsuccessful.

I created a new (very small) backup job.  I loaded a brand new tape and it has been thirty minutes that Backup Exec shows that it is "Loading Meda".  The backup has not started.

I have pasted the errors and logs below.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here's the important part

"The job was automatically canceled because it
exceeded the job's maximum configured
run time. "

Increase your maximum time, at the very least it will clear out that log entry and might show what's going on

Rajith_Enchiparambil:

Thanks.

I UNCHECKED the "media capacity check to complete individual job"
I also edited the backup job to only backup about 8 GB, the I ran a Test Run.  It failed.
Also a very small "new" backup job with a "New" tape just sits there saying "Loading Media".

I think your second link doesn't seem to state a solution.  Maybe it does but I'm not clear what it might be.

I diasbled SEP11 (Symantec Endpoint 11) and tried another test.  It did NOT help.

I just erased  the new tape I was trying.
I selected some files  (about 1.5GB) from Friday to backup and IT WORKED???
Previously, it would just get stuck at "Loading Media".
Any ideas?

Check your "alerts" tab at the top.

I bet there are a ton of messages about the Tape being the wrong one or overwrite protection enabled.

(veritas is picky about tapes, if it is expecting a tape label 000001 and you through a tape labeled 000002, it will never move from "loading media"

Also, if you have overwrite protection enabled and you don't have the auto-respond configured for the Tape Alert Message "media overwrite notification" the job will hang at "loading Media"

C:\program files\veritas\backup exec\windows\nt\BEUTILITY.exe will allow you to configure the auto-repsonse for "media Overwrite"

scroll down to BE 9.1 for instructions of how to use BEutiltiy.

Put a new tape into the drive.
Right click tape -> properties and Label Media
Give a name and run it (It will format the tape along with this)
Run a small job after that.

See how it goes.

I used a new tape yesterday (did not label or format it) and I ran a small job and it worked.  I tried the same tape this morning and ran another small job (1.5Gb) and it worked.  I just doesn't want to run my scheduled job or a Test Run.

Brugh:  I checked the Alerts there were NO messages about the Tape being the wrong one or overwrite protection enabled.  The erros we basically the same as I stated in my first post.

I have downloaded and installed SP4.  Maybe thet will help.

Should I just try to create a NEW Scheduled Backup Job?  What do you think?  I'm so confused!

I just checked the backup: 3 GOOD backups in a row????
Do you think SP4 fixed it?

Sorry, for the extreme delay closing this call.  Brugh's solution seems to have solved the problem.

The term "Backup" means the methods and processes involved to copy computer data (system data as well as application data) to media other than the ones where the data originally live (disk, tape, optical, cloud). "Restore" in turn means the methods and processes involved in data recovery, i. e., bringing back copied computer data to their original location. Backup/Restore primarily serves as a means of protection against data loss, be it due to disaster, corruption or sabotage. It can also be used for recovering data from an earlier point in time and even for cloning machines or applications. There is a wide variety of backup/restore software available, from expensive commercial products to free or open source tools.
