asked on

'the system cannot find the file specified' message when trying to use 'save Picture as' command for images in mailbody

Hi,
whenever someone sends me an email with an image inserted into the mail body, I cannot use the right-click  'save Picture as' command. I get a 'the system cannot find the file specified' message.
Works in Thunderbird and Outlook.

How can I solve that?
Important:
Note that I know workarounds (forward the email or switch to txt view), but I am looking for a solution like replacing a corrupted file etc.

Thanks

Hello Sumukha,

With Outlook Express, the images are temporarily saved in the Temporary Internet Files folder.  Delete the files in the folder and try again.

Hope this helps!

Sumukha--I have one correspondent who frequently sends me embedded pictures.  But right click|Save Image As does not work for this correspondent's pictures and I get the same error message.  No problems with images embedded by other correspondents in their emails.
However, this reference may help.  There are several ideas there

Thanks, jcimarron,
I've seen that one before. It's a workaround..

Going through the other suggestions.

War1,
Can it be that  mshtml.dll  is involved in that?
If images are embedded, I guess OE is using parts of IE.

When I run regsvr32 mshtml.dll, I get a message that mshtml.dll was loaded, but the DllRegister Server entry point was not found

You may need to type

regsvr32 path to mshtml.dll

and then hit OK.

jcimarron,

I just noticed that it does not happen with all. One sender is on a MAC, Tiger 10.4.11,
the other person has Outlook.

war1,
it'll take me some time to test your suggestions, pretty bust these days.

Ok, Sumukha!  Keep us updated.

Sumukha--Remember that my thought is that it is the embedding process used by the SENDER that prevents the image being saved.  There is little you, as the RECIPIENT, can do--other than take a screenshot.)
I am still trying to learn from that one correspondent of mine who sends images that cannot be saved what his embedding technique is.

Sumukha--Perhaps a little better than a work around, if it works.  What happens if you right click on the image?  Do you get the option to COPY?   Use it and Paste into any graphics editor (MS Paint, Irfanview, etc.).  You should be able to Save it from there.
I learned from the correspondent I mentioned that he sends emails by Outlook.  It is hard to believe that is the reason I cannot Save Picture As, so I am asking for more info.

Sumukha--
It has something to do with a bug in IE, which MS has known about for almost two years and has done nothing about.  http://www.pcuser.com.au/pcuser/hs2.nsf/lookup+1/F797231ACC28D4A1CA256E9C00134D2C
So I do not believe there is a fix.  And the workaround to forward the email to yourself, as you mention in your first post, is probably the best solution or workaround.  Or maybe a screenshot.  :)

Sumukha--When I said "I do not believe there is a fix", I meant at the RECIPIENT's end.  In my case I have the problem only with the one correspondent.  Do you have hotmail?  You could try using it to receive email and see what you can do as far as saving images in email you receive.

jcimarron, you are right. After downloading the messages to a brand new installed XP machine, the same error occurs with these messages.
So no corrupted files anywhere, but also no solution.

I guess I just split the point between you two ald close question....

We just had this problem too.  As a quick workaround, forward the received e-mail back to yourself.  Then, go to the forwarded message in your Inbox, and then you can right click and Save As will work.

It does look like the problem is from how the original sender is sending the e-mail.  When you forward it to yourself, it somehow resets the format and allows you to right click the forwarded image and Save As a jpeg.
