Server IP not showing up

So I have server on our network but addressing it directly is not bringing up a web page, and I dont know the proper path for where the web files are stored. I think I have found it, but still I need to know how to address it. It appears to be a PHP site, and its running on OS Xs Apache web server. I dont really know how to proceed. I also cant just map www.theSiteName.com to xxx.xxx.xxx.xx (the servers address) as I thought I could, but even if I did, that address is what I tried in the first place. I also tried using OS Xs Server Admin program to start up web services, which were pre-configed for the external IP address of the  web site, and re-configed its web server service for its local address but no dice. I think they are running a custom config of Apache.

Basically, anything anyone could say to clarify would be greatly appreciated.  If you read this please just write whatever comes into your head and post it, as I really just need to here what someone else thinks on this in order to clear it for myself.

You are saying that your server has an internal IP of w.x.y.z, and browsing to that address results in ....?  A 404?  A server not found or no path to server error?  Please explain in explicit detail what you are trying to do.

When Apache is configured, the first vhost entry assigned is also considered the default entry.  The vhosts are assigned by IP and port.  This means if your server's only configured host is a.b.c.d:80 (the public IP), then browsing to w.x.y.z:80 should still bring up that site.  If another host configuration is present for w.x.y.z:80, then Apache will serve that content instead.

If you cannot reach the server with w.x.y.z, try pinging it.  This may just be an issue of connectivity.  Are there any routing devices between your workstation and the server?

Finally, you should be able to find Apache's conf files in /etc/httpd/conf.  That is the default directory, anyways.  If you can't find them there, search the drive for httpd.conf, or run 'httpd -S' as root.  The conf files will tell you all the hosts that are configured, as well as the directories used to store their content.  If you post them here, be sure to edit them to remove identifying information (like the actual public IPs).

ASKER

Routinet - Here is the error message I receive:

Safari cant open the page http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xx/. The error was: lost network connection (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.

I can ping the site.  So it is not a connectivity issue.

I can't find any actual public IP or identifying information so let me know if this is the wrong file.  It was titled httpd.config inside /etc/httpd  (there as no conf folder inside httpd)

#### Default httpd.conf for Mac OS X Server
####
#### This httpd.conf differs from the httpd.conf distributed
#### with Apache and the httpd.conf present on Mac OS X.
#### Feel free to edit this; the Server Admin app also edits this file but will
#### respect your changes unless noted below. See also ReadMe.txt.

##
## ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
## configuration, error, and log files are kept.
##
## NOTE!  If you intend to place this on an NFS (or otherwise network)
## mounted filesystem then please read the LockFile documentation
## (available at );

## PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process
## identification number when it starts.
##

##
## ScoreBoardFile: File used to store internal server process information.
## Not all architectures require this.  But if yours does (you'll know because
## this file will be  created when you run Apache) then you *must* ensure that
## no two invocations of Apache share the same scoreboard file.
##

##
## Server-pool size regulation.  Rather than making you guess how many
## server processes you need, Apache dynamically adapts to the load it
## sees --- that is, it tries to maintain enough server processes to
## handle the current load, plus a few spare servers to handle transient
## load spikes (e.g., multiple simultaneous requests from a single
## Netscape browser).
##
## It does this by periodically checking how many servers are waiting
## for a request.  If there are fewer than MinSpareServers, it creates
## a new spare.  If there are more than MaxSpareServers, some of the
## spares die off.  The default values are probably OK for most sites.
##
MinSpareServers 1
MaxSpareServers 5
##
## Number of servers to start initially --- should be a reasonable ballpark
## figure.
##
StartServers 1
##
## MaxRequestsPerChild: the number of requests each child process is
## allowed to process before the child dies.  The child will exit so
## as to avoid problems after prolonged use when Apache (and maybe the
## libraries it uses) leak memory or other resources.  On most systems, this
## isn't really needed, but a few (such as Solaris) do have notable leaks
## in the libraries. For these platforms, set to something like 10000
## or so; a setting of 0 means unlimited.
##
## NOTE: This value does not include keepalive requests after the initial
##       request per connection. For example, if a child process handles
##       an initial request and 10 subsequent "keptalive" requests, it
##       would only count as 1 request towards this limit.
##
MaxRequestsPerChild 100000

## Dynamic Shared Object (DSO) Support
##
## To be able to use the functionality of a module which was built as a DSO you

## AddLanguage allows you to specify the language of a document. You can

##
## Note 1: The suffix does not have to be the same as the language

## Note 2: The example entries below illustrate that in quite
## some cases the two character 'Language' abbreviation is not

##
## Note 3: In the case of 'ltz' we violate the RFC by using a three char

There are other files that end with .conf  Should I be looking at one of them instead?  if so how would i know which one?
In the future, use the attach file or attach code option for large files.  That gives us the ability to easily reference line numbers.  Your configuration does have a default site set up:

>>> ##
>>> ##
>>> ## The default server is used for status on a special port
>>> ##
>>> #ServerName www.example.com
>>> Port 9010
>>> Listen 9010
>>> DocumentRoot "/tmp"
>>> ErrorLog "/var/log/httpd/error_log"
>>>
>>>       Order Deny,Allow
>>>       Deny from All
>>>       Allow from 127.0.0.1
>>>

It is using port 9010, not port 80.  To browse to that site, you should use http://w.x.y.z:9010.  The documents should all be somewhere within the /tmp directory tree.  The Port directive indicates you are using an older version of Apache...be sure to take that into account when you look for information on your server.  You can check your version by using the -v or --version switch when calling httpd on the command line.  In this particular instance, I believe the Port directive is redundant, and is overridden by the Listen directive.

Additionally, Apache is using at least one include file.  The Include directive tells Apache to load the referenced file as if it were included inline.  The first include:

>>> # Including WebObjects Configs
>>> Include /System/Library/WebObjects/Adaptors/Apache/apache.conf

That is an absolute path reference.  The next include can potentially load any number of conf files, depending on how many sites have been configured:

>>> ####
>>> #### The following Include directive is essential for the virtual hosts to be usable.
>>> ####
>>> Include "/etc/httpd/sites/*.conf"

Check that directory for all the conf files for your virtual hosts (if any).  There may be none, there may be hundreds.  Only looking will tell you.  Each vhost should indicate an IP and port, just as your main configuration did.

i think I should mention that the way I start the apache server up is going into the terminal and typing in Sudeo apachectl start.  It processes all the conf files, including the aforemention ones.

However, when i try to run this with server admin it says there is no server available at the address you entered.
I was wondering also if it matters that the certificates inside the Web Server under Settings under Certifications are expired.
Certificate expiration should not keep the server from responding, though the user agent should generate a security warning for it.

>>> By the way, aa.aaa.aa.a loads, and aa.aaa.aa.a:80 does not.

Those two SHOULD be the same server, since port 80 is the default.  Then again, your virtual host configuration only shows a vhost container for port 443.  That means any port 80 requests will likely go to the default server, which we discussed in our first posts.  Can you verify the presence of content in the /tmp directory?  Have you tried an SSL connection?  https://aa.aaa.aa.a

Also, you have a NameVirtualHost set up for port 16080, but no configuration for it.  Try that port as well.

Right now, it looks like you only have the one vhost (aa.aaa.aa.a:443) set up.  If there is no content in /tmp, that means you'll only have the one site serving any content.
