Adobe After Effects not utilizing full 4GB of installed RAM

I have windows XP 2002, with 4GB installed on my computer. I bought the entire Adobe Master Suite and when I try and use After Effects, it only utilizes 2GB of the 4GB of RAM.

I have researched that there is a GB switch that you can turn on and allocate 3GB of the 4GB to applications. However, I have heard that doing so can seriously destabilize your system. Is there a safe way to have After Effects utilize more RAM without destabilizing the system, or does the 3GB switch really even destabilize the OS?

Please give guidance.

MultiMedia Applications

Multimedia applications are those programs that integrate more than one media at a time; browsers are the most obvious. However, the term has come to include the use of programs that enable the use of any component that isn’t simple text and static graphics, such as audio, video, animation, virtual reality, conferencing and monitoring.
