if it can read cd's, and not dvd's probably your drive is bad, and must be replaced.<br />
to confirm, try to boot from a bootable DVD, like vista install DVD, or make your own

It reads the DVDs too. I was only describing what happens when I insert a CD so that you would have all the information. Basically, the drive knows which disk is in it but when I try to open or play the disk I get the message to insert a disk into the drive.

Before replacing the drive make sure that the IDE cable is firmly seated at both ends. &nbsp;If you've got a spare, try replacing it. &nbsp;If that doesn't work, as was already mentioned, you can get a DVD burner for less than $25 these days.<br />

I have a LITEON DVD_ROM LTD 163 in a Dell Dimension 4550. When i insert a disk into the drive it appears to be reading it but when I double click the drive icon in My Computer I get a message telling me to insert a disk. when I first open My Computer with no disk in the drive the icon shows DVD-ROM. If I insert a CD I can watch the icon change to a CD-ROM so &nbsp;know it is seeing a CD rather than a DVD. Unfortunately, I cannot play wither in this drive. I have tried updating the drive but there is evidently no update available. I am using driver version 5.1.2535.0. I have also removed and reinstalled the device with the same problem.<br />
