Your answer confused me when I first read it because it doesn't appear to answer what I meant, but after re-reading my question I supposed I asked it wrong. I shouldn't have said &quot;can it be changed without re-encoding?&quot; because I was implying that I had a clip that looked correct with 1:1 pixels and I want to change the PAR and not change the shape of the video and <b>still</b> have it look correct, which of course would require re-encoding.<br />

What I really meant to say was if I have a clip intended to be displayed at 16:9, but it has been distored and squashed down to 4:3 and in practice when played shows up as 4:3, can I set a flag in the <b>container </b>format which will instruct the player to reshape it during playback? If there's a setting in the container format, then the most that would be required is remuxing, even though it wouldn't add horizontal resolution, it would make sure the video is the right shape, which is why I was asking, is the PAR a setting in the container?<br />

Can't really answer that, dont understand what this container is<br />
&nbsp;if it's for a DVD and you have already created it at 4.3<br />
&nbsp;what I do with a video in 4.3 using media player classic I change the video playback aspect to 16.9 and it pplays back in that.<br />

but try using super video converter it wont re-encode it just change the aspect ratio in the video scale size<br />

The container I want to use is MPEG-4 Part 14 (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4_Part_14" rel="ugc">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4_Part_14</a>), containing a MPEG-4 Part 10 (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC" rel="ugc">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC</a>) video stream and for playback on a PC (using either Windows Media Player, or iTunes or similar). In technical terms I was asking which standard defines the Pixel Aspect Ratio? Part 14 (the container, in which case I could fix the ratio without reencoding, and if so what application can I use), or Part 10 (the video stream, in which cause it would probably need to be reencoded)<br />

This is not for DVD. I only categorised this under DVD because the origonal source for the video was a DVD, this is not the intended output.<br />

Thanks for the links, I've read up on it and found that with a program called 'MP4Box' I can change the PAR from 1:1 to 4:3 causing the input video of 4:3 to be reshapped to 16:9 (since 4/3 * 4/3 = 16/9) which is what I want. I've tried playing it back in a couple of different programs and they play it back at 16:9 just fine now.
