I have been tasked with testing cold backup scripts on a virtual machine (Xen server)... anyone familiar with Xen servers? Or at least have an idea on how I would go about doing this? I assume I need to install Oracle before testing the scripts?

Can't help with Xen, but your second answer is yes.  Good news is that with the installation wizard and the notes, it's not that difficult to create a "sample" database.

The "cold" scripts might be ambigious.  Personnally, I infer that the db instance is stopped, the SA does an OS backup.  To test the restore, one would bring up the instance, make a DML change, bring the instance down, and overlay the database files from the backup set.  Am we in synch this far?

Yes this gives me a clearer concept of the steps involved.... thank you.  Not sure what you mean by cold scripts being ambiguous though. Can you clarify?
What platform is the Xen server environment running under? (i.e. CentOS, Fedora, RHEL, etc)
