asked on

Do you have to reboot a Dell Powerconnect 5224 to be able to console into it?

I need to get to the web interface for a dell powerconnect 5224 that we have, however, no one knows the ip address of it so I will have to console into it.

After reading the manual, it says you have to connect the console cable, set up your terminal session then boot up the switch, which is not ideal to do during the day and all.

Is there another way to get the ip address possibly?

Thank you

hi!
it is not necessary to reboot switch.
however I have noticed several times, that console is not working for some dell devices until reboot.

I am connected but not seeing anything in the hyperterminal screen, so I'm thinking I'm going to need to reboot.

FYI I tried connecting with Windows Vista, but no luck.  I rebooted the switch numerous times and nothing in the terminal screen, even though it says connected.  And also, with the console cable plugged in, the ports will not become active, strange.

I used Vista because the laptops we have here with XP on them are old and really slow.  I'm going to give XP a try and see what happens.

Switches / Hubs
Switches / Hubs

A switch is a device that filters and forwards packets of data between LAN segments. Switches operate at the data link layer or the network layer of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model and therefore support any packet protocol. LANs that use switches to join segments are called switched LANs or, in the case of Ethernet networks, switched Ethernet LANs. A hub is a connection point for devices in a network. Hubs are commonly used to connect segments of a LAN. A hub contains multiple ports; when a packet arrives at one port, it is copied to the other ports so that all segments of the LAN can see all packets.
