My window computer takes a long time opening the My computer icon

When I am out of the office and through a vpn session, the my computer icon takes about two minutes to open and my machine just freezes.

Is there anything I can check in windows?

How do you connect to the internet when you login to the VPN? DSL, Cable, or Dial-up?
How fast is your office internet?
Do you have any third party firewall applications?

I disconnected a network drive that was still connected. My computer icon open instantly. Any reasons why when you disconnect a network drive it speeds up?
