This Security update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 will not update. In the system event log it is error 0x80070643 and event ID 20. There is also a Security update for >NET Framework 2.0 that will not install with the same rror code and ID.

Are you trying to update via WindowsUpdate or Microsoft Update OR have you downloaded the files individually to apply the updates yourself?  If you're using MS Update, download the individual updates and install them without the help of Microsoft Update which doesn't always succeed as often as we would like.

I don't know the specifics of your .Net 2.0 security update.  But, here is the location for the specific KB update:

I got that error for a while as well. I was able to resolve it by killing off my SQL Server processes with the task manager and then trying the update again. Alternatively, download the update manually, start windows with all startup programs disabled (but not safe mode) using Start>Run>Msconfig , and then try the install.

I don't see any processes in task manager that have "sql" in them. are the processes named something elese? when you say "start windows with all startup programs disabled" how do I do that?

From what I am seeing it is more than likely due to the script not being able to finish before it fixes everything.  Microsoft suggests the following.

**DISCLAIMER: Editing the registry can be very dangerous.  Always ensure that you have your registry backed up if you are leary of the changes you are making to your registry. **

1.  Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2.  Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
3.  In the right pane, locate the ServicesPipeTimeout entry.
Note If the ServicesPipeTimeout entry does not exist, you must create it. To do this, follow these
     steps:
          a.  On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
          b.  Type ServicesPipeTimeout, and then press ENTER.
4.  Right-click ServicesPipeTimeout, and then click Modify.
5.  Click Decimal, type 60000, and then click OK.
This value represents the time in milliseconds before a service times out.
6.  Restart the computer.

There should be applications called sqlservr.exe and sqlbrowser.exe running as network services. If you cannot view network services you may not be a local administrator.

To restart with everything disabled, go to Start>Run>Msconfig , select "Selective Startup" and disable "load Startup Items" Under the "Services" Tab disable SQL Server service and SQL Server Browser service.

You will need some services running to run the installer.

tried all three of those solutions and none of them worked. when I go into SQL MGMT studio, my windows authentication (logged in as local admin) won't let me log into either database....... could this be a rights issue? That is what I found event 20 to be.

No. Your ability to login to the computer has nothing to do with your ability to log into a database. The passwords are different. If it's a serious issue, uninstall SQL Server, then download and install the latest version. You won't lose any of your databases. Following that, check once again for updates.

Then I recommend you take fhlio_admin's advice in the second post. You should not have difficulty uninstalling software from the control panel.

Windows Server 2003 was based on Windows XP and was released in four editions: Web, Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter. It also had derivative versions for clusters, storage and Microsoft’s Small Business Server.
