Logging Into Exchange 2007 with POP3 Not Working

I've had our company's Exchange 2007 server up and running for a number of months now and we use the OWA outside of the network and the Exchange connector inside of the network. Everything was running smooth, until it was requested that one of our outside guys have POP3 access. I enabled all of the services and set them to automatic. I then changed the login to plain text. Finally I opened up the ports in our firewall. So then I go to configure the employee's laptop from the outside and for some reason it won't let me log in with POP3. I keep getting the following error message from Outlook 2007: "Log onto incoming mail server (POP3): Your incoming (POP3) e-mail server has reported an internal error. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet Service Provider (ISP). The server responded: 220"
