asked on

Has anyone successfully run Yahoo IM for multiple users on MS Terminal Server?

I support a Terminal Server and it seems a single users profile is affecting all the others.

Anyone know how to force Yahoo IM to work properly on MS Terminal Server 2003?

Alternative IM recommendations that support Yahoo are also welcome.

Thanks,
Fred

Also, since Yahoo is installed and configured for 7 people, I'd like to first look into getthing Yahoo working properly.

I just recently implemented a 16 user Windows 2003 R2 virtual TS environment where the clients heavily use Yahoo Messenger for interoffice chats. I was able to make it work properly for some users but not all... While it will function properly in a multi user environment (saved passwords, and preferences are configured on a peruser basis.) I've logged several complaints from users suddenly seeing no text when sending/receiving messages. Quitting the application and reopening solves the problem but it arises sporadically and is very annoying. We've been unable to find any solid solution for the issue.

Also, Yahoo Messenger is graphically intense in displaying ads, images, videos, etc. none of which functions very smoothly over RDP unless you're using some specialized media acceleration options.

I'd recommend looking at two programs depending on budget requirements and enduser needs:

Pidgin (formerly Gaim) is an open-source application built on GTK+ that runs very solid with a relatively low memory footprint, especially in comparison to yahoo messenger (~26mb at idle vs ~45mb). http://www.pidgin.im

If you're interested in going the commercial route, icewarp.com has an instant messaging server that offers some really neat granular controls that make managing the environment for multiple users very smooth. It also includes encryption and logging services for compliance purposes.

I installed Pidgin for a couple of users, but now other users are getting blank IM messages from the Pidgin users!!!    I've been having a hard time finding known compatable IM clients for Terminal Servers.

The client is open to installing an internal server / system for IM and not using Yahoo.
Further thoughts?
