I also get an error when I try to setup alerts from subsites.<br />
<br />
I also applied the update microsoft referenced with this KB article: KB 942989 <br />
<br />
And I was told there may be something wrong with my MOSS environment but I am unsure of what to try next, since I have tried 4 different servers for smtp service and tried creating a new site with a new web application and tried creating a site and alert after installing the update mentioned.<br />
<br />
I believe I am stuck.

Looks like your out-going email server setting is not working.<br />
<br />
So, it could be:<br />
<br />
1. Your SMTP or Exchnage does not allow the system account or application pool account to send emails.<br />
<br />
2. Your email server does not accept emails relay from SharePoint server.<br />
<br />
3. Your SharePoint server can not see the email server at all.<br />
<br />
If you can try to ping yur email server from the SharePoint server, perhaps you can eliminate item 3.<br />

I checked the application pool accounts and I am using the network service account for the: OfficeServerApplicationPoo<wbr />l <br />
and <br />
the ReportingAppPool<br />

I am using an administrator account for the:<br />
SharedServices1<br />
Sharepoint - 80<br />
Sharepoint Central Administration v3<br />

How do I make sure that it accepts relays; I played with different settings for the smtp service in iis from allow only the list below to allow all expect the list below<br />

Also I just verified I am able to ping from the sharepoint server, Im not sure if I need to be connected locally but the sharepoint server and its sql 2005 database are both hosted on the same virtual server. (is this a bad idea??) Before I had to restore the sharepoint database was on a different server and I was using sql 2000 sp4<br />

I also tried shutting dow the firewall but judging from the logs its like you said doesnt seem to be getting off the server.<br />
<br />
I think Ill try putting sql on another server to see if that helps.

How about your anti-virus application? Somtimes this one can block the port to send emails.<br />

Sorry it took so long, I had to contact our firewall vendor to be sure that the ports were not being blocked and they confirmed that it wasn't blocking the smtp ports.

You were right it wasn't my hardware firewall vendor but it was my windows firewall that was blocking smtp port 25, I created the exception and now all my alerts are working.<br />

I also believe I setup the proper relay settings but nothing works. The alerts show up in the content databases but they just sit there.<br />
