Compare Corel Painter and Photoshop

I'm about to start learning digital painting.

I have Photoshop CS3 (and Illustrator as part of Adobe CS3 Web Premium) and I've dug Corel Painter 8 out of a dusty drawer.

Before I start the learning curve, my question is - in the Experts' opinions which application is best for digital painting? I had assumed that it was Painter, but a web search reveals a lot of support for Photoshop.

I'm prepared to upgrade to a later version of Painter if it's worthwhile. But I'll probably upgrade to the Adobe CS4 Web suite when it's released so I don't wish to waste money on upgrading Corel Painter X unless there's a significant benefit.

Thanks in advance.

It is a good issue to discuss with and I am sure it would be an unending debate. Avid users of each application will surely defend their reasons why they love the application they are using for they are already accustomed with it.

Each application has its own distinct features that its users liked, so whatever application you gonna used you will be in good hands for both have the same target, i.e. to enhance your digital images.

Considering that you have the latest version of Photoshop, I may suggest to use it and start learning with it. And if in any case you will try to learn the Photopaint, I can assure you that lots of concepts you learned from the Photoshop can be used in Photopaint.

The bottom line here is: Though the application has different approach in enhancing your projects, they have lots in common.

Anyway, I also pasted below the link of Site's fora regarding the same issue. Have a try to read it.

Please disregard my first comment. I was not paying attention with your question. What I was in my mind is the Photopaint application built-in with Corel Draw. It is really a shameful experience to answer a question not paying attention of what is being asked. It would be a learning for me to be careful next time.

Anyway, I am sorry for it.

Let's start again.

I HAVE both programs.

I asked the question because I would prefer NOT to have to learn digital painting in both programs and so would like to hear Experts' opinions.

I assumed that Corel Paint is more suited to digital painting than Photoshop because it's a dedicated program, but perhaps that isn't so. If Photoshop is just as capable as Painter I'll stick with it because I already use it for other functions.

Thank you people. You've given me everything I needed.

I thought my googling skills were good, but I didn't find the useful links that MINDSUPERB came up with.

There seems to be two main schools of thought amongst users.

School 1.
Use Photshop to adjust the base image;
Then use Painter, for the brush strokes;
and use Photoshop, for the final adjustments.

School 2
Painter has the edge for pure digital painting.

I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and learn both.

Thanks again.
