Replacing Exchange Server with new hardware

Hi

I have an exchange server running Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard edition and exchange 2003.

Its running on extremely old hardware and i have bought a new server to replace it.  The new server is also running Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard edition and exchange 2003.

What is the quickest and easiest way to install the new server and move all the accounts across with mimimal fuss?

thanks

The easiest way is simply to install Exchange to a new member server, and then run the Move Mailbox wizard to transfer the mailboxes across.

You could also "Swing" the migration, a procedure which I particularly like. The method is available at http://www.amset.info/exchange/migration.asp.

Hi Guys

Just undertaking the swing process as mentioned.  One thing i havent checked is that my current exchange server is used for direct push to various phones and laptops etc.  This server has a secure certificate can i move this over to the new exchange server or do i have to create a new one and go through the process of replacing the cert on all the phones and laptops etc?

thanks in advance.

Assuming that externally the new Exchange Server will still be accessible by the same FQDN that the old Exchange Server was accessed by and the FQDN present on the certificate (usually mail.yourdomain.com), then you can transfer the certificate to the new Exchange Server and it will still be trusted on the remote devices.

Where did you purchase the certificate from, or is it a self-generated one? If you purchased it from somewhere, you should be able to go to their website and re-download your certificate in order to reinstall it.

Alternatively, please check http://www.geocerts.com/support/export_import.php for the nice procedure of exporting and then reimporting the certificate on each server.

I got the certificate from comodo.

All the mailboxes are currently moving accross so so far everything is going ok :)

Will have a look at the geocerts link now.  thanks

Hi Tigermatt

One last question.  I am struggling to see why the public folders are not moving accross.  Can you offer me any tips on this.

thanks

Assuming you added the new Exchange Server as a synchronization partner on the Public Folders, there is not much else you can do but sit back and wait for replication to take place. It has been known to take weeks in Exchange 2000 - Exchange 2003 improves on this, but it can still be slow.
