Did you, by any chance, change the page view encoding from &quot;auto select&quot; to something other then UTF-8? Alternatively, check what encoding the page uses after rendering and change it manually to see your arrow. Then you know that the content negotiation is incorrect (or: not IE6 compatible).

@abel and Hulfy: I think IE6 can render some of those little &quot;blivet&quot; images, it's just a matter of finding the right code. &nbsp;that's why I left the unicode script above. &nbsp;You can fiddle with the GET arguments. &nbsp;I'll leave it online for a while longer, or you can copy the snippet and tinker with it

@Ray: agreed. I didn't mean to say or imply that IE6 was not capable of showing Unicode. It is. But often, when you see a block or question mark instead, the encoding of the document is incorrect, either in HTTP, in the HTTP-EQUIV header tags or in the DOCTYPE. 
 
I remember, vaguely, that IE6 gives precedence to the HTTP-EQUIV, which means that your PHP code should work well with IE6. 
 
Now I'm left to wonder what the OP has got ;)

I guess you are right. You are talking of entities here and I was thinking of character encoding. Then a problem that may remain is the font. If Arial is selected it will select Arial MS Unicode. But does that also happen when you have a different font?

Left and right pointing arrows have NO HTML code that works in all browsers. &nbsp;This is one of the greatest failings on HTML in its initial conception -- NO code support for arrows or directional symbols. &nbsp;The people who designed the code sets for the various code pages where hung up on European symbols, like umlaut and cedilla, and NEVER EVEN considered directional symbols. 
 
That said, if you pick the RIGHT CODE PAGE, and use the SYMBOL FONT set, you might be able to get this to work, but without that tweaking in the HEAD of the document, sorry, you will not get it to work.

to something different than ISO 8859, or whatever you are using -- that will allow left and right arrows, ALSO realizing you will have to invoke the SYMBOL font set in your document, then you MIGHT get it to work, but don't expect too much from IE6 -- it was not that aware of extended ascii codes when written.

Going back into my codebase, I found that I have used some of these arrow characters in a web app since 2004, so I' pretty sure the little arrows will render in most common browsers regardless of HTTP-EQUIV or DOCTYPE. &nbsp;Open this page in your browser of choice and see what looks right for you. &nbsp;In modern browsers, I find that FF renders a lot of characters, and IE doesn't do much. &nbsp;But both of them are consistent on some of the arrows you need, so you should be OK so long as you're not using some goofy font. &nbsp;If you find a post 2004-browser that doesn't render any of these, please let me know. &nbsp;
