Try it in safe mode (hit f8 before the windows splash/loading screen appears, and then choose safe mode). <br />

This normally happens when an application is set to start or run from a file somewhere inside the profile, normally with antivirus. By renaming in safe mode, hopefully that application/service wont have started. <br />

Im sure you probably have done this, but also maybe just try a reboot. If you have been logged in as the user, and you just do a logout (not restart) then windows keeps the files active and doesnt release the links. You have to reboot after the user has logged out, then go in as admin and rename., <br />

yea I wish i could do that but unfortuantely the computer is remote and I can't give the user the local admin password. I was hoping for a clever way to clear any file locks on the folder.<br />

remote onto the machine run shutdown -r form teh run command give it a few minutes to shut down and reboot then log in as local admin through remote desktop and you shoudl be able to delete then.<br />

if notgo to control panel, admin tools, computer management and take a look at opne files and sessions kill any with that user against and then try deleting again

Have the user log off, then connect to the Administrative share of the disk that has the folder. &nbsp;Attempt to rename the folder without anyone logged on.<br />

I need to rename a user local profile on a Windows XP sp2 desktop. I suspect it is corrupted and causing an issue with an application.<br />
Anyway, when I attempt to rename I get the error message &quot;Cannot rename %foldername%. Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.<br />

I am logged in a the local admin and have verified I have full writes to this file.<br />
