Best Economy Car Fuel Efficient

My daughters want to buy their first car. Can you recommend a good fuel efficient car? that won't break down and be a piece of junk? We'll likely buy used, so something that still maintains a good value used. I don't want to have to pay several hundred a month in repairs all the time.

thanks.

Buy a used SUV. You may pay hundreds more on gas, but you'll save thousands on the purchase of the vehicle.

I would recommend a recent model Honda Civic or Corolla.  Both are decent size and get excellent gas mileage.  The Corollas can achieve just under 40 MPG on the highway if they're not pushed hard.

While Prius or Civic hybrids are better on gas, you need to also consider that they will be more expensive up front and it could take years to break even in terms of fuel savings.  Due to the current higher fuel prices, they have caught a lot of attention so it's likely that their prices will be higher.
Also be aware that the fuel economy on a hybrid drops substantially when you use the AC.
Depends what the vehicles primary usage will be. Hybrids are fine if that's your cup of tea for around town usage. They will get beat on the freeway in the mileage department by your non hybrid compact vehicles. ex.   Focus /  Civic / VUE / Aveo / Cobalt / Corolla ect, due to the extra weight of the batteries that they must haul around. Both nj_glenn and raehrlich make outstanding points to keep in mind as well. Fuel mileage and the life of the vehicle will also depend upon abuse the vehicle see's and routine maintenance that it receives.  Also something to consider would be ROI on a hybrid vs a non Hybrid vehicle, remember batteries in those just like any do go bad, and they can be costly to dispose of and replace. Let us know and I am sure we can get back with some more helpful insight.
If you are serious about fuel efficiency then they should buy a diesel car. Have a look at:
http://www.whatgreencar.com/search/mpg
The best is approx 61 miles per US gallon.
Diesel are so noisy.

I'm afraid you're a little out of date on that. Modern diesels are really very sophisticated and relatively quiet compared to diesels only 10 years ago. I have a friend with a Mercedes Benz diesel saloon car and I would defy anyone to tell that it's a diesel. I have been on 400 mile trips with him and it's quieter than my petrol engined Saab. It is also as fast as my car, and does 50% more miles per gallon.
