SNMP statistics are not the same thing as protocol analyzation. If you want to see what prototocol is using what percentage of the pipe, then SNMP will do the job. If you want to see ALL of the traffic, and want to actually look at it, then you will need to setup a protocol analyzer like wireshark (what used to be ethereal is now called wireshark).<br />
Wireshark is free, but it will need to listen on a spanned port.

a cisco 3750 switch or router to capture the traffic and analyse the different sessions(protocol wise/appliaton wise) and to calculate the bandwidth utilized by each application. Could anybody suggest<br />
any good tool (freeware/ is solar winds ok) for the same and how to configure it ??<br />

How to capture traffic and analyse the same from cisco 3750 / cisco router

A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer networks. Routers perform the "traffic directing" functions on the Internet. The most familiar type of routers are home and small office cable or DSL routers that simply pass data, such as web pages, email, IM, and videos between computers and the Internet. More sophisticated routers, such as enterprise routers, connect large business or ISP networks up to the powerful core routers that forward data at high speed along the optical fiber lines of the Internet backbone. Though routers are typically dedicated hardware devices, use of software-based routers has grown increasingly common.

Routers

A switch is a device that filters and forwards packets of data between LAN segments. Switches operate at the data link layer or the network layer of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model and therefore support any packet protocol.
