You can use the Mid and InStr functions to get the result you're looking for. Simply replace the word text with the string you want to search.

This will return the first string found in the range supplied. 
The text between the brackets must be uppercase letters, numbers or underscores. 
 
You can use it on the main text of the ActiveDocument, so:

I am trying to something very similar. I need to search for something between brackets like so [some_tag&gt;some_other_tag] I need to traverse through one document and find some_tag then go search in another document for some_other_tag. So I need to get what's in the brackets then parse some_tag and parse some_other_tag into a variable. I am kinda stuck on exactly how to do this. GrahamSkan your solution seems like the best fit in part. I tried your code above but like this

and that did not work for finding the first part of the tag. Thanks a lot!
