Process Explorer does show programs running in the background. Here is a tutorial on how to read Process Explorer

Hi scoinzen
I will recommend a software called Security Task Manager.
Security Task Manager displays detailed information about all running processes (applications, DLLs, BHOs, and services). Very easy to use and give a lot of information.
Of course this isnt a free program but it has 30-day trial.
