asked on

timeout during fileupload

While uploading a file, which is larger size , i am getting msg like ,  "session timeout since idle for long time ". I am using websphere portal6.0 . and websphere app server 5.1. How can i increase this idle time (programatically/ with configuration settings?). Can anyone give me some idea? thanks!

From the administration console

- Select/Expand the Servers section (left frame)
- Select Application Servers
- Select application server (by name)
- Select Session Management
- Select either
  No timeout (radio button), or
  Set timeout (radio button)
if you select this option, specify a timeout value (in minutes)
- Select OK
- Save configuration
- Stop & Restart your application server

Thanks! But is there any otherway to keep the connection alive between server and browser without increasing the timeout? since increasing  timeout may  result in more session objects in memory .

no, not really.  If you want to "keep the connection alive", you need to either disable the timeout (i.e., set "no timeout"), or set a "large enough" timeout value for the circumstances.

Hi...i changed the session timeout value and LTPA timeout value to higher number. still its giving me the session timeout message.
I have restarted the websphere app server also. Do i have to restart portal server too? any idea?

The portal server shouldn't have anything to do with the session timeout.

Are you getting messages in the SystemErr.log, or SystemOut.log?
If so, please provide them.

How "large" of a transfer is occurring?
How long is your timeout?
What OS are you using?
Can you monitor your network traffic and see if the timeout occurs after the specified amount of time after the session goes quiet?

I am uploading a file of 70MB.
Windows is my OS.
i am not getting any error msgs.....the file is uploaded and saved in the server. but...before the response comes back, the session times out.
How can i monitor the network traffic ?

Good.  I'm glad that you liked that suggestion.
I've learned a lot about how things work by looking closely at the information flows.

Thanks for the grade & points.

Good luck & have a great day
