asked on

10gb crossover?

I know this can be done more effectively with a more advanced network switching infrastructure then what I have today, I would like to have a couple of servers that have their "primary" connectivity to the LAN, but then use a dedicated high speed link between only the two servers for data transfer, so the "primary" will be standard gigabit ethernet but for the "secondary" perhaps a 10gb ethernet crossover or a fibrechannel link, does anyone have ideas

Go fiber my friend. A crossover is used to connect 'like' devices, but fiber is just great for speed and scalability. You can't go wrong with a glass backbone :)

do you have any recommendations, I guess it all depends on my available PCI Express slots but this will be my first fibrechannel NIC, it will be recognized by the OS (Windows Server Ent 2003 R2 x64) as a NIC, from which I assign an IP (like subnet between the two boxes) and I am on my way correct, any common manufacturers of the cards so I can start looking?, since I don't have a fibrechannel switch I just use an "inline" transciever correct?

Networking hardware includes the physical devices facilitating the use of a computer network. Typically, networking hardware includes gateways, routers, network bridges, modems, wireless access points, networking cables, line drivers, switches, hubs, and repeaters. But it also includes hybrid network devices such as multilayer switches, protocol converters, bridge routers, proxy servers, firewalls, network address translators, multiplexers, network interface controllers, wireless network interface controllers, ISDN terminal adapters and other related hardware.
