MS SQL Will not conect via named pipes to remote machine, tcpip only...

I am trying to set up MS SQL Replication between "Server" and "Lap2" (laptop)
In MS SQL, Server will not connect to Lap2 using the laptop name which is "lap2"
I can ping either way using tcpip or the server names.
Named Pipes is turned to on for both Server and lap2.
Using the SQL Management Studio, I can connect to the lap2 database using the tcpip but not lap2.
However, when I try to connect using the browser, I see lap2 in the list of servers but it won't let me connect.  ?????
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I talked more to my tech and he pointed out additional information:
We are connecting via a VPN.  We can connect when we do it directly on the LAN.  However, when we try to connect remotely via the VPN, we have the above mentioned problems.  It seems that it is probably a network problem rahter than an MS SQL problem..
I am told that all ports are currently open on the VPN.
Any suggestions as to what would keep it from connecting over the VPN when everything works over the LAN?

Yes Security setting through your VPN to the db...this opens up a whole other troubleshooting arena depending on your router, the domain settings etc etc and at that rate you should close this question then and set another question in the operating system and/ or security zone...as it is most like then not a SQL issue but rather config settings to VPN..

Here is one more comment:

When I have a laptop connected to my server over the VPN, I can go to "Start/Run" and type in "\\10.0.1.29" (or whatever IP the laptop has been dynamically assigned) and it will bring it up.  However, if I try to type in the name of the laptop it won't access it.  Why is it that I can access the laptop via the IP, but not a named pipe?

A quick clarification:  when I said I can go to "Start/Run", I was talking about on the server

This is up to how your admistrator has the systems confiigrations set up I would directly consult your system administrator or network administrator for these sepecif questions as it all depends on your specific environment itself. Different environments et the configurations different ways depending upon established policies and best practices ...
