Sage, Act!, V10, 2008, email application checks out as working but is non functional. There are no mail boxes???

I have been useing Act! for 15 years and have never seen this one. Sage have not given me an answer and I am compleatly baffled. The Act email setup is normal and the built in e-mail check test is all ok. However, when the Act! e-mail application is opened there are no folders in the Act! mailbox folder and all functionality is greyed out except Send/Receive.
Try sending a message from the data base and got.
"the e-mail message cannot be created because the default e-mail account is not ready" even though in the e-mail application status line it says the application is online and ready and reports 0 messages.

What email system are you using in ACT! - Outlook, Internet Mail, Outlook Express, Lotus Notes?

What build of ACT! 10 (full build from Help | About)?

If the Internet Mailstore has been damaged, you need to contact Sage. they have a tool that can repair it that they can run remotely.

Hi
Nice to know that they have a tool to repair the internet mail store. Would the answer be the same if I were using Outlook Express? (the fault is the same).

I will try to contact them and ask them to help. No doubt they will want money for their service!!! ???

Thanks

Dave

I'm not sure about Outlook Express... do you have Outlook? With Outlook, it uses the Outlook store

Sorry have been taking a break. Still have no solution. I cannot get a response from Sage. The symptoms are the same for Outlook Express. I need a later version of Outlook to run with this rev of Act!. I wanted to solve this problem before making the investment.

Thanks

Who have you tried to speak to at Sage?
Where are you based?

Have only tried email as getting to speak to someone other than a consultant (no offence) seamed impossible. I got the impression that they just did not want to know. Like I said there has been no response to my email. I am in NZ.

Might be worth while contacting a local consultant and see if they can do it cheaper... although, I'm not sure they have access to the tool for it.

Do you deal with any of the consultants in NZ?

Ok
Sage came back to me and tried to fix remotely with  repair software which he downloaded onto my machine. But it did not work! However, he did point to what the problem was. My email servers have closed the ports that the Act! email application uses so although it connects, nothing can be received. This checked out when I changed the email setting on my other machine still using Act! 8 from MS outlook 2000 to Act!Internet mail.
Looks like the only way that you can use act! email is if you use a dial up email connection!
I have ordered MS Outlook 2007 as I will be able to select which ports will be used to communicate with my remote mail server.

Ahhh... well, that might explain it.

Yes, ACT!'s Internet Mail only works with the default SMTP/POP3 ports and you need Outlook for non-standard ports.

BTW: Did they charge for it?

No I talked them out of it.
I can not find anything in the act! material that I have that discusses this problem. Are you aware of anything? I am sure I am not he only person using security conscious email servers. A must I would have thought if you wanted to use the Act! email.

It's only very recently that some ISPs have started using non-standard ports... not for security, but to try and block spam.

Most users who need this with ACT! use Outlook

OK well hopefully this little conversation will help flag it.

Yes, will do.

It might get done if enough people use ISPs that use non-standard ports and don't have access to Outlook or Outlook Express ... I don't know how big a segment of ACT! users that's likely to be.
Email Protocols
Email Protocols

Interactions between email servers and clients are governed by email protocols. The three most common email protocols are POP, IMAP and MAPI. Most email software operates under one of these (and many products support more than one). The correct protocol must be selected, and correctly configured, if you want your email account to work.
