Problem with public IP for router

I just got a public IP for this client, but the network guy for the city couldn't give me a subnet or gateway for it. Is there a way to find the subnet & gateway for a public IP so the correct info can be put in the clients router? Could I use "who is" for the IP to find this info? I don't think the Linksys RV042 router will connect thru a router-to-router VPN without this info.

akahan's suggestion is a good one so long as it returns an IP in the same subnet. Often it does, but I have static IP's here and if I set to obtain via DHCP it will obtain one, but in a totally different, larger subnet, that uses a different subnet mask.

You know it's a new day, don't waste your time, call and demand the information. It's like having new tires put on your car and they leave one off and suggest you deal with it.
It's a very reasonable request as it is part of the necessary information they must provide.

who is the city network guy?  why don't you ask the ISP?

Also when setting up peers in Cisco devices I never have to use the subnet mask.
I might guess it is the same in Linksys, I could be wrong.

It does not look to me as though you need a mask for your public IP

here is a link to confirm the configuration - assuming you are using two linksys devices.

We finally got this to work. The network guy for the city's network took my RV002 router to his office & put it on the city's network. Then he brought me a Cisco router (old one they weren't using) that connected 2 subnets. He also used another public IP. For some reason, the IP he had given me wasn't working with my setup.

Everything is up & running fine now. I appreciate all of the help!!

Thanks for all of the help!!!! I learned quite a bit from this!!
Routers
Routers

A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer networks. Routers perform the "traffic directing" functions on the Internet. The most familiar type of routers are home and small office cable or DSL routers that simply pass data, such as web pages, email, IM, and videos between computers and the Internet. More sophisticated routers, such as enterprise routers, connect large business or ISP networks up to the powerful core routers that forward data at high speed along the optical fiber lines of the Internet backbone. Though routers are typically dedicated hardware devices, use of software-based routers has grown increasingly common.
