Thanks for your response go. &nbsp;I think this solution is a little bit above my expertise. &nbsp; 
 
It looks like you are using dynamically created clips and actionscript 3, correct? &nbsp;I have created my clips manually and am using Flash 8 for authoring. 
 
Is there a simple way to add a line or two of actionscript to my timeline to tell the player to bring the movieclip instance to the front at that point in the timeline?

I ended up solving this as follows: 
 
1. &nbsp;I added a layer for actions across the top of my timeline. 
2. &nbsp;I then inserted keyframes at each point when the individual state clips are called 
3. &nbsp;I inserted the following code in each of the keyframes: 
 
tellTarget(&quot;my_state_mc_instance_name&quot;){ 
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;gotoAndPlay(2); &nbsp; 
} 
my_state_mc_instance_name.swapDepths(999); 
 
The first line tells my state movieclip to start playing. 
The last line sets the depth of my state movieclip to 999, bringing it to the front of the rest of the clips. 
 
GO, if you want to post that, I'll accept it as the solution.

As the movie plays, each of the state movieclips are highlighted in succession by increasing in size and then going back to normal size. 
 
The trouble is that when the states grow, they aren't always in front of the other states. 
 
I've tried using swapDepth but the only examples I can find use on (release) which wont work for this application. &nbsp; 
 
How can I use actionscript to bring the state movieclips to the front when they are growing?
