asked on

How do I upgrade USB 1 ports to USB 2.0 ports on my Dell laptop?

Hello all,

I have a fairly old but still very usable Dell laptop.
How do I upgrade the 2 USB ports from their current version 1 to usb 2.0?
What is the easiest way of doing this?
Do I have to open the laptop, or is their an external attachment I can plug in?

Many Thanks,
Riaz

Thanks for the quick response, and to confirm, I wasn't looking for software.

Ideally is there an easy option involving phsically removing the 2 USB 1.0 ports and installing 2 new USB 2.0 ports. Can't find these on the net.
Not too keen on PCI cards sticking out of the side as have kids running around!
Also for your information laptop is Dell Inspiron 8100

Thanks again, Riaz

Nope.

It's the chipsets on the laptop motherboard that are different not the actual physical connector.  You can't remove and replace those chipsets.

The above is correct.
The reason is the IC chip is different between USB 1 and 2 and that chip is soldered on the motherboard.
For that matter: Often it's built into the main chipset on the motherboard.

The Only choice you got is to get a PCMCIA to USB Adapter which usually comes with 2 ports and I have seen some with 4 ports as well. See the link below.

Yes, we all posted our advise but seems like 'reyaazm' is busy  or no longer interested in this question.
