From my understand of the question. If his table has 15 Rows he wants 16 Rows placed within the DropDownList. He has used numbers to illustrate the list contents, however I am assuming he wants to display something from the Table and use the Value to later access the Row/Record if selected by the user.<br />

Declarative or CodeBehind is a matter of choice. I have no arguments against either. Personally I would do this Declaratively and Bind the Datasource, but a better understanding of the process can be obtained from my code. ;)<br />

Though I'd like to see an easier way sometime to get to the number of records. Most databind controls of Microsoft do not give access to the number of records, which is a nuisance. Perhaps it is a performance thing, but then it would be nice if the datacontrol itself had an &quot;onfinishedretrieving&quot; or something, with all the properties well set.<br />

ROW_NUMBER() was only introduced in SQL Server 2005 and was long one of the targets of criticizers of SQL Server, since pagination, which is usually done with a function providing such functionality, isn't easy without it, and sometimes nearly impossible if queries are complex.<br />

But yes, IF you use SQL Server 2005 (or MySQL any version, or Sybase, or Oracle, or IBM DB2 etc) you should use something like that. But then still, shouldn't it be part of the intrinsic functionality of the datasourcecontrol?<br />
<br />
Btw, I usually use a DAL like NHibernate, which places all objects in Lists (or Collections or whatever) and has very simple and efficient syntax (above the slow retrieval of all items) to find the amount of items in a resultset. Under the hood NHibernate does a Count() on the recordset, of course, which is way faster then retrieving the whole recordset.<br />

It would take the pain out of a lot of operations if we could have record numbering, however if this is to the detriment of performance then I think it would be a bad idea.<br />
