We have an email server with Exchange Server 2003 installed. We suspect that Spammers are making large amounts of connections to the server, and eventually overwhelming the SMTP server and causing it either to stop receiving emails or hang.<br />
<br />
The email server is installed behind a Watch Guard Firewall. We have to end rebooting the server to free up all the connections.<br />

Spammers making large amounts of connections to the email server

Interactions between email servers and clients are governed by email protocols. The three most common email protocols are POP, IMAP and MAPI. Most email software operates under one of these (and many products support more than one).  The correct protocol must be selected, and correctly configured, if you want your email account to work.
