Windows XP not recognizing a .msi windows installer file

Lenovo t61, windows xp sp3 and now all of a sudden it is not recognizing .msi installer files
tried the registry fix on this website
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm    (number 94) and that doesnt work
Its seeing executable files but not .msi files ...

first you can try the regserver solution and if that doesn't work you can try the registry fix

Also, are there any related errors in your event viewer?

yes please see the image

if you cannot read it it says this

Unable to start a DCOM Server: {73E709EA-5D93-4B2E-BBB0-99B7938DA9E4}. The error:
"The system cannot find the file specified. "
Happened while starting this command:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe -Embedding

there are HUNDREDS of this message in the event viewer
i tried the registry fix suggested on the link you sent but its telling me it cant find the file ?
