You need to login as root.<br />

When you do that, you can set permissions on files you want to read/edit to be readible/writable by all. Then you wan't need to login as root anymore to edit those files (the command for this is chmod - for example chmod go+rw filename &nbsp; would give read and write privileges to the filename by others and group). You don't need to relogin. Just in a shell write su (as super user) and give root password. This would make you root for a while. When you finish, type exit.<br />
<br />
Note: the files belonging to root (e.g. config files) are not safe to be left writable by anyone. Do it only if you really need it. Otherwise use su.

if in the terminal window, after prompt you write su and then after enter, the password to root you will be considered root - but only within this shell window. But you will be able to chmod the files you want to edit.<br />

Do you use kde or gnome? If kde, there are some pretty handy extensions to konqueror, like context menu with root actions. But you will still have to give root pasword (<a href="http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Root+Actions+Servicemenu?content=48411" rel="ugc">http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Root+Actions+Servicemenu?content=48411</a>)<br />
