How do I write SQL to find VARCHAR2 data in a column versus NUMBER data?

Hi,
I have a column MYCOL that is VARCHAR2(100) but I want it to store the ID to that name in a lookup table.
It has mixed data in it because it gives error not a NUMBER when trying to move data to a dummy field.
How do I write SQL to find VARCHAR2 data in a column versus NUMBER

select MYCOL from MYTBL where ????
