Presario laptop has loud hissing noise

I am trying to pinpoint what is causing a loud hissing noise on a Compaq Presario laptop.  The laptop is out of warranty so I cannot get any assistance from HP.  It is less than two years old.  I notice the hissing sound on boot up, during log in and randomly as the laptop is used or even just sitting idle.  It hisses when the laptop is connected to the A/C adapter and also when it is running on battery only.  I removed all power saving features from the laptop to run it as "always on" and never try to save the battery.  Still no change.  I replaced the hard drive and noticed no difference.  I am running Windows XP Pro SP2.

must be something to do with the fan as it is kicked off at start up and then as and when it gets hot, if you know how to take the machien apart then do so and give the fan a good clean and remove any blockages that could be over the ducts
It might possibly be some dust bunnies built up on the fan?  If so, some compressed air might do the trick.
One thing to note though is that if it has been that way for a long time, the fan may now be off-balance and only replacing it will get rid of the noise.
It may also be the motor on the cd/dvd drive- is it removeable? if so try removing it and see if the noise goes away.

It's not going so well.  I tried to remove the switch cover and popped a key off.  I'm now trying to get the key back on.
Did you discover where the noise is coming from, you shouldn't need to dismantle it until it is known that the cooling fan is the problem

I've taken out the CD bay and booted.  The hissing sound still happens during boot up, but seems to be quieter during run time.

I got the key back on!
Have you  muted the speakers?
Have you listened to the cooling fans up close and personal?
100% its the fan or a blockage on the ducts, wont be sound intermittent but always at start up and when needed

I took it apart and completed cleaned off the system board and all components.  It wasn't even too dusty.  The noise is coming from the area where the cooling fan and heat sink are.  I will order replacement part, if I can pinpoint it's the fan area that's getting hot, should I just order the fan or more parts too?
I would just go with the fan for now
Actually its called the Fan/heatsink assembly, which is probably how you will need to replace it, as one unit.

I did place the order for the thermal heat pad & fan model assembly.  I will not likely add another post until the shipment arrives and install the part.  I shipped it ground so it will likely be 4-5 days until I see it.
thats cool as ststed initially this has to be the issue due to the times of when the hissing was coming, if you have any difficulties fitting teh heat sink let us know as it can be a little awkward failing that you shoudl be fine from here on in

Thanks, from my past experience installing a new heat sink and fan I recall the biggest issue was getting the adhesive unsealed from the existing heat sink, allowing the part to be replaced... and scrapping a lot of skin off my fingers!  :)
haha yup make sure you havea good supply of pressured gas, wear an anti static bracelet if you can and make sure the machine is turned off before you start :O)

Replaced heat sink module without any issues and the laptop now runs almost without any noise!
