Flash - keep image crisp and clear

Hi I am working in Flash. I have an image with a lot of text on it. I am wondering why the it looks like it has lost some of its clarity and also the font looks like they are different weights. Is it because I made it a movie clip and does Flash do something to an image when I make it a movie clip and what can I do in the future to compensate for the lack of clarity and fonts lookiing more washed out? Also it looks like it is a different size, but I know that it is scaled down correctly, but appears to have changed. Do you know why this is?

Try looking under your Publish Settings on the Flash Tab. There should be a horizontal slider bar to signify image quality. Jack that thing on up to 100

I already have it at 100. The image size originally is very large. Should I have done it in the smaller size to begin with? Why does it lose its sharpness like that, maybe if I know why, I can figure out what to do to prevent it so much.

ok I'm following you now. Yes you should resize the image using a photo editor and re-import/update. When flash resizes an image, it uses a pixel-resize method which almost always distorts the image.

Hi,

If you're scaling the image smaller, you probably have some leeway.  However, the more you shrink it, the more distortion and fuzziness will enter in.  I would resize the photo in Photoshop or Fireworks first and use that.  Also, a large image will greatly and apparently needlessly increase the size of your swf file.

That really did not help. What does Flash do that causes it to make the font weight look different, not as clear or heavy?

also the original was an .ai file and would not import to Flash 8, so I changed it to a jpeg, is there something else that I could have done?

I didn't see your second reply.

If you have an ai file, is it vector graphics only or is there an image too?  I would take the ai file in Illustrator and scale it first, and then save as a jpeg.  That should be nice and clean.  Make sure to select 'keep as editable' when importing.

You could also try running it through Fireworks and exporting as a swc, which would import fine into Flash.

If possible, break up your photo into text and graphics, and overlay or generate the text within Flash.
That did it.
