normal.dot being overwritten when using the snag-it print
I have a user who about once a month had layout issues with word and i quickly realize that normal.dot has been changed. i have noticed that when he tries to print using the snag-it printer, it does that.
anyone had that before?

Affiliated IT,
How are you doing?
Try updating the snag-it software, as a fix in version 6.2.1, was to prevent changes to normal.dot
Some questions:
- What is the process that the user has in place when you say "uses snagit printer"?
- Is the user taking a snagit screen shot from inside Word or from an external program (like a web browser or excel)?
- Is the user taking the screen shot while Word is open?
If you have created a custom "normal.dot" for the user and now the user has it changed by the snagit program when utlizing that, could you create your template in a different file name and select that to be loaded as default, thus the snagit can change the normal.dot, but since you are using something else (mytemplate.dot, for example) the changes won't occur that to?
I believe that the snagit program by default makes changes to the normal.dot template as a way to illustrate on screen and in print, what it has done (like a super macro).
Hope this helps,
Kevin

the user is using templates with names different than normal.dot.
the way he uses it : click on file, print, select snagit and prints it with snag it.
when snag it opens the preview, it looks strange and the normal.dot has already changed. it doesn't happen all the time. 1 or twice per month.

What is the output that the user is trying to get via the snagit software? PDF?
I use the snagit software only as a screen capture solution, never as an output via Word.
Is there anything we can isolate about these templates that the user is utilizing, do they Including:
Tables
Charts
External Data
Or anything specific to the ones causing the issue that are not in others. My thought is that the snagit software does not agree with something that is within these templates, so isolating it, maybe we could do a different work around (such as changing a table or drop-down form) to a format that "snagit likes". If the output option is to, for example, print to PDF, then perhaps a different PDF writer would be a better solution, as others do not have these kinds of issues, at least that I know of.
oh very nice!
i am trying this now, at least it will give us an idea on when it is happening and we'll isolate the problem. i'll update you very soon. he is using 2000 and it has that option.

Affiliated IT,
I am crossing my fingers on this one! Hopefully that will help us out,... but with Office and third party add-ons... who knows, right?
Thank you for the grade! Figuring this one out makes me feel good! Often I go into these questions just "trying to figure them out", but getting the solution is sweet!
Glad it works out, now you can teach him the right way!
