VPN Issues with Road Runner
I have a remote user that has a laptop and I have created him a VPN connection on his laptop to our office.  I have Comcast cable internet service for my home and I can VPN this way to the office and works great.  I can ping DNS names, map network drives according to standard UNC paths, open network software and it works great.

But I the remote user has Road Runner internet.  I have all drives and everything mapped and it doesn't work.  I can make the VPN connection no problem.  I go to click on SMTP / Outlook, network drives in my computer and network databsae software and nothing works.  It times out everytime I try to open a network drive and it won't return anything at all on his desktop.

I am scratching my head trying to figure this out.  If memory serves me, about 5 years ago I had Road Runner.  And I am thinking I had to switch from a home user service to a business class service in order to get VPN to work normal.

My question am I going down the right path of though process or is there some setting that I am overlooking.  I can't figure why it is working fine on Comcast Internet service when I test it and then on Road Runner it won't do anymore than just connect.  They won't help and just want to sell me stuff and give no answers.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Quick question... is the user behind a DSL/Cable router?  What is the IP address generated by that device does it conflict with your own IP\subnet addressing.

Is the router also VPN friendly.

I have had many users with issues behind routers stemming from common router setups (i.e. their DSL router assigns IP addresses in the same subnet as the target VPN subnet)

Some of the cheaper DSL routers will not pass IPSEC/PPTP or L2TP vpn's.

Quite often of course the general user population doesn't realize what a router is or does so you may have to dig.

Good Luck!

Well I had the user take his router out of the picture and connect the interenet straight to his laptop.  After that I had him do a quick reboot.  The I took remote control of the laptop and still had the same issue.

I find it strange the night before i test the laptop and it works like a charm.  THen I get onto a road runner connection and it appears that everything is blocked.  That is the only thing that changed on the laptop. it was only out of my hands about 2 hours and the person called me and turned it on the first time.  So I know everything was working.  I just get this funny feeling that it is something getting blocked by Road Runner internet service.

What kind of VPN are we talking about?

PPTP, SSL, IPSEC or L2TP

Can you telnet on those ports?  Even though it may not connect your firewall (depending on the type) may see the attempt and log it.

I use fortinet routers\appliances myself as they are very good at collecting this information.

Can the user test the VPN with a dialup connection to another ISP?

I have tested it on another ISP and it works absolutely great.  I have no problems.  Until I use there current ISP then the problems occur.  Everything else is fine.  I really think it is an ISP issue.  I used the same ISP in the past and had some similar issues until I changed to there business class account.

Yes it sounds like RR...

Until these companies get the concept of net neutrality, your user may just be SOL.

Does the user have any other options in the area?  Have you called RR tech support to see if there is anything they are blocking?

I tried chatting with their tech / sales people and they appeared clueless.  They did have something on there website about a VPN option.  So after further research it appears that they want you to pay for something that should be a part of what your already paying for.  But it does appear that they are blocking a port of some sort on me.

I had the user test at a hotel on a different ISP while he was traveling.  Everythign works very well and fast.  So it has been proven that Road Runner Internet Service does not allow VPN it appears on there regular services.  I have come to the conclusion out of 4 ISPs that is the only ISP where the problems I have experienced exist.

A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or travelling users access to a central organizational network securely. VPNs encapsulate data transfers using secure cryptographic methods and other security mechanisms to ensure that only authorized users can access the network and that the data cannot be intercepted.
