GFI Faxmaker 14 not communicating with Exchange 2003

Hello All,

I am using GFI Faxmaker 14 (recently upgraded from 12).  Version 12 for some reason stopped forwarding the incoming faxes to the e-mail account setup for this purpose.  No passwords were changed.  I get an error now in the monitor that says "Error uploading report.  Mail moved to undeliverable folder. Make sure that you have set the Email2Fax Gateway mail server settings correctly."  I have set them correctly.  I can ping the mail server by name and by ip address.  From the mail server I can ping the fax server.
I have tried changing the user account that the Email2Fax gateway uses, but that did not resolve the issue.
The mail server is running Exchange 2003 Enterprise and I have allowed relaying from the IP associated with the fax server.

On the fax server what firewall are you using?  Have you setup the firewall to allow outbound communication on the SMTP port?  Some firewalls also check to see where the traffic is coming from, so ensure SMTP traffic from this program is on the allowed list too.
I have the exact same problem. Faxserver has been working great for about 7 months now and since yesterday i keep getting the same error   "Error uploading report.  Mail moved to undeliverable folder. Make sure that you have set the Email2Fax Gateway mail server settings correctly."

I am using Exchange 2007 btw.

The fax server and e-mail server are both located behind a firewall on the same subnet, with no firewall in between them.  I double checked to make sure windows firewall had not been activated.  It is not running on either server.

Pannivas,

Same thing here, it was working great for several months, at the time I was running v12.  So I decided to upgrade, hoping that would solve the issue.  It didn't.  So now I'm thinking the problem might be in Exchange 2003.  Now you say you are running Exchange 2007 and getting the same.  So maybe its not Exchange.  As far as I know, no changes have been made to either servers.
I just tried telnetting to port 25 from the faxmaker server to the mail server.  I established a connection and sent a test e-mail from administrator@faxmaker.com to myself through the Exchange server.  That worked fine.
I checked the link out, not much help there.  It pretty much suggests re-installing gfi, which I did by uninstalling v12 and installing v14.  And it suggests resetting all the services, which I did by rebooting several times.  It suggests a mcafee rule blocking port 25, not the case in my situation.  I do use McAfee, but have disabled the blocking port 25 rule.  Thank you for your continuing support of this issue.

Merely blocking McAfee may not be sufficient.  The number of times I have temporarily removed AV programs (mainly McAfee and Norton) to get something rational happening is quite substantial.  Trouble with some AV products (being consumer-oriented products) is that they think there is no reason for anyone to send out legitimate communications through the SMTP port other than through e-mail clients that they recognize.
I will try as you suggest, by uninstalling McAfee briefly to see if that is the problem.
The fact that this has been working fine (and same with pannivas too) smacks of Update problems.   What programs regularly perform updates?  If you can put a date on when this occurred, look at your "Restore Points" for that date (or just before), and see whether anything warranted producing a "restore point" at that time.

If so I wouldn't recommend necessarily going back to that Point, something might have happened since then which will break if you do restore.  Better to get rid of the program that unilaterally decides how you wish to be force-fed.
I just uninstalled McAfee, restarted the server and tested a fax.  It failed with the same error message (the fax came in and printed, it just wasn't sent to the mailbox where it was supposed to be).  Same upload error message.

I agree, it must have been an update.  I will look into that.  The only date I have to go by is the last received fax in the mailbox.  I will tackle that now and post what I find.

Thank You.

-Ken
I have tried everything but no luck. I installed the latest build as per GFI support instructions and send them some files generated by the troubleshooter. I doubt that they will come up with a solution to our problem though.

I am using Kaspersky antivirus, added exceptions to the whole gfi folder and the fmgwinet.exe, but again no luck.
I am almost sure that the cause of this mess is some update, although i don't have my servers to automatically install them.

The only change is saw on my exchange hours prior to my problem was:

Event Type:      Information
Event Source:      MSExchangeIS
Event Category:      General
Event ID:      9661
Date:            29/07/2008
Time:            17:21:10
User:            N/A
Computer:      BON-NIC-EX01
Description:
The Unsolicited Commercial Email default filter level has been updated. The new value is 8.

From what i read this is for the Intelligent Message Filter which is only for Exchange 2003, don't really know what it is doing on my Exchange 2007 though. Not sure if this could be the reason for my issues.

Thanks for your help guys, hope to figure out something today

Thats for your post moor, the problem is that i can't find this IMF filter anywhere in order to adjust/disable it.
Not even in add/remove programs like MS suggests to remove it.

Strange that it showed up in my eventvwr since it is an Exchange 2003 feature.
Is it in Administrative Tools, Services?

(I am about to head out for the day, so won't be in a position to respond to any further comments until this evening UK BST).
Further thought (if it is in Services):

Be careful of the dependancies if disabling it - SMTP may depend on it to be running to receive any messages.
Couldn't find it in services :(

Have a nice day moor, i will keep battling this problem :)
Finally i have managed to get the Faxmaker to work correctly.

The issue was on the exchange server as it appears, though i don't really know what happened to cause the problem.

I added the internal ip address of the faxserver to:
Organization Configuration > Hub Transport > Global Settings > Transport Settings > Message Delivery Tab

30 seconds after i added the ip, the faxes started getting routed.

I will try to find the same option for Exchange 2003 and get back to you, as i have another faxserver on another company with 2003.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Pannivas.  I too have an IMF message in event viewer right before the problem started.  I have done as you suggest though, and no luck.  But I will tackle it with this new information and post back any results.
Still battling this.  I made changes to the IMF's in Exchange, but with no resolution.  I'm going to turn off all filters in exchange and restart exchange to see if that shakes something loose.
BTW, IMF was not checked in exchange on my smtp virtual server, so I checked the box and turned it on for a little bit and one of my other applications stopped being able to e-mail, so I turned it back off.  I have yet to restart the exchange server after removing the filters, but I have restarted the smtp virtual server.
this is proving harder than I thought, so I am increasing the point value to the maximum 500.
I will continue to look around, hope i can get some useful info for you.
Faxmaker started working this morning.  A message I posted in GFI's knowledge base received an answer.  (http://forums.gfi.com/m_900766412/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#900766552).  I stopped the services, deleted the smtp_in_log.txt file located .\program files\GFI\Faxmaker\logs, then restarted the services.  As soon as I did that, messages started coming in.  My log file was 700+Mb, so I don't know if it was a size issue or what?

I believe both moorhouselondon and pannivas were very helpful in resolving this, so I am going to split the points between them.  Thank you.
Thank you both for all your help.
Thanks, i'm glad you resolved your issue :)
