This may be a pipedream but I am wondering if there are tools out there that will help automate the management, deployment, and remote access functions of vmware images.

Currently this is what we have to do to get a new test image on line -

Copy existing image if one exists or start with base OS image.
Load/configure additional software if necessary.
Power up new image.
Assign new ip address.
Update NAT/firewall settings to allow certain traffic to pass throught to vmware image.

Here's an example if I could have my wish... -

I log into a vmware management console and I walk through a wizard that lets me build an image with certain pieces of software already installed and configured  It then lets me (if needed) expose the image to the outside world via web browser.  Many of my images use IIS so I would want to be able somehow manage the IP addresses.  Also I might want to have Remote Desktop access to the image as well.

Is there a way to setup a proxy of some sort so that I don't have to always be dealing with NAT and my firewall?

Is there a way to have base vmware images that auto-update themselves without me having to leave them turned on?

thanks for any ideas.
