"String[1]: the Size property has an invalid size of 0." when it gets to line

My sp is returning a String parameter with a result of the stored proc

sqlComm.Connection = sqlCon
        sqlComm.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
        sqlComm.CommandText = "spQEDataRollOver"
        sqlComm.Parameters.Add("@newQEDate", SqlDbType.DateTime)
        sqlComm.Parameters.Add("@spResult", SqlDbType.VarChar)
        sqlComm.Parameters("@spResult").Direction = ParameterDirection.Output
        'Set the Parameter value
        sqlComm.Parameters("@newQEDate").Value = "2008/09/03"

            sqlComm.ExecuteNonQuery()
            iCount = CType(sqlComm.Parameters("@spResult").Value, String)
            sqlCon.Close()
