Editing charts in PowerPoint 2007

We have recently upgraded to Office 2007 and a number of users are getting
error messages when trying to edit charts that were created with previous
versions of Powerpoint. There are four errors. they basically say:

1. To edit this chart using the new features available in the 2007
Microsoft office System, you must firat convert it to the 2007 office system
format. Do you want to convert to the new format. It does not matter which
option is chosen as none of them work.

2. Microsoft office powerpoint can't start the application required to open
this object. An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning.
Would you like to repair now. If you chose yes, then it runs through the
repair process, asks for a reboot and does not fix anything.

3. The server application, source file, or item can't be found, or returned
an unknown error. You may need to reinstall the server application. Click
ok and the following message comes up.

4. Microsoft Office Powerpoint can't start the application required to open
this object. An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning
properly. Would you like to repair this feature now. You choose yes and
runs through the repair and restarts and still doesn't work.

I have read a lot of the support and have checked there is less than 300
fonts, I have reregistered the graph.exe and got a message saying it needs to
be run from another program.

I have run through the different help and repair options.  I have also reinstalled Office from scratch with a full install so that it is run all from my computer.

This is effecting both VLK and OEM versions, but not on all machines.

Any ideas?

Opening Excel before PPT does not solve the problem.  I cannot see any add-ins for Avast (AntiVirus), but have asked Avast if there is one.

Even if a new presentation is created and saved and then opened again, the problem still exists.

thanks,
You do have Excel 2007 installed, correct?

I have installed the complete Office professional edition and did a complete install so that all features were set to run from my computer.

All of the Office updates are installed.

MAybe I am missing something, but isn't the compatability pack for users of older Office version so that they can use the access the new file types?
Where are you looking for the "add-in" for Avast? It won't show up in, for example, Office Button | PPT Options | Add-ins.

Here's information on Norton's add-in for Office. Maybe it will give you some ideas for Avast.

Norton Anti-Virus and Office

There are some registry settings to prevent PPT from converting "old style" charts to "new" Excel charts. If you have this set, you shouldn't even be prompted to convert the charts, but just in case...

According to the Avast people, it only has an add-in for Outllok and does not affect anything else.

I have already crested  the registry key for MSGraph, but this did nor solve the problem.
I don't have any more ideas then, sorry.
Even if you don't have Norton, do this:
Use Windows Explorer to search for: officeav.dll and make sure you search everywhere even hidden files.
If you find it, click Start, click Run and type this, quote marks and all and where [path] is the path to the officeav.dll file:
regsvr32 /u "[path]\officeav.dll"
then click OK
It's likely it may have been on your PC at one time.

Although these are new build PC's, I have now tried this, but there was no file found.

I am getting desperate now, if I cannot find a solution, a complete rebuild of all the problem PC's will be required.
You might call Microsoft support before you go that route.

It looks like Excel is loading in the background, in that it starts to show up under the process list when you click on the edit chart, but it does not launch.

Odd, have you tried running Office Diagnostics on Excel?

Microsoft cannot find the reason behind this either. I have been working with them for a while now and the next step is to rebuild one of the problem PC's to see if this solves it.

Hi guys. I have had this issue: "The server application, source file, or item can't be found, or returned an unknown error. You may need to reinstall the server application. Click ok and the following message comes up."

I have muscled with it for a close to 6-8 working hrs and I have found few solutions that worked for me.

Cause: Office 2007 Service Pack 2 breaks somehow graphing. Discussed also here.

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/24725390/Powerpoint-2007-hangs-on-graph.html?sfQueryTermInfo=1+2007+edit+graph+powerpoint

Resolution.
Few options exist. This one is fastest but least desired one but on some pcs works, some don't. If you don't have charting key in reg it will most likely not work. If you do. It should.

Option 1
Add reg key discussed here: http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00872.htm

This option works better but is longer.

Option 2
Uninstall Office 2007 and delete following key for each user that is affected under windows
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/OFFICE/12.0/
Reinstall office 2007. DO NOT INSTALL SP2. Open each products first then open PPT that had issue.
