What is the difference between an ADSL router and a DSL/Cable router?

I'm confused as to the difference between an ADSL router anda DSL/Cable router.  Both are connected to the modem by the same link that would be used for direct connection to a computer.  To me that implies that since the link is the same there should be no need for different types of router.  I can understand that the same would not apply if it was a modem/router.

The way I'm reading this, in Cisco terms the ADSL router is going to attach directly to the phone line.  I.E. the router has the modem built into it and doesn't require an external, ISP-provided modem.  The DSL/Cable router is a residential grade router that takes an ethernet connection in from the ISP.  Not all ISP's work well with customer provided ADSL boxes and it might be difficult to get someone from tech support that knows what they are doing.  I would say go with the Cable/DSL router, typically cheaper and can be used almost anywhere.
Cheers!

I could accept what you are telling me if all ADSL routers were in fact modem/routers but this does not appear to be the case with some of the products I have seen advertised, i.e. no mention of a modem capability.
