Connection problems using VPN and RWW

Since replacing a duff router some members of staff are having problems connecting remotely.

I found the Certificate wasn't set up correctly and Jeff at TechSoEasy has helped me sort that.

However, two users cannot make a RWW or VPN connection. One is using a crappy old PC, the other a new laptop with mobile broadband. When the signal is on one bar (max. three) reception the laptop can't connect. However, with the old router, they had absolutely no problem in connecting at a good speed.

For the user with the crappy old PC, make sure they update their NIC drivers to the latest versions.  Windows Server 2003 SP2 has instituted more stringent authentication controls to provide better security for your network an your newer router is now taking advantage of those.  Older NICs will have trouble connecting unless the drivers are updated.

As for the mobile broadband card, its hard to say, but I am aware of other instances where weaker connections would not sustain authentication either.

You really need to provide more detailed information about what the EXACT errors are.  I doubt they are getting the same error with RWW that they are with a VPN connection.

Jeff,

Using RWW both PCs can login and select an select Connect to my Computer..... then select the computer. They get the blue screen with IP address at the top, but fail to reach the login. Instead after 5 minutes they get  an error message:

"Certicate Error - vbscript: remote desktop disconnected. An internal error has occurred."

Using VPN they are both unable to establish the VPN connection and it times out. I will ask them for the error code.

Thanks,

Mike

The network is still a bit patchy at the moment since the new router.

I found using two of my XP Pro machines on the same network:

Using RWW (which worked perfectly from these machines yesterday) when I select the Client PC I want, it attempts to load but finally displayied the following error on both PCs:
VBScript: Remote Desktop Disconnected
An internal error has occurred.

Using the VPN, the connection establishs itself very quickly. Although, it's fine now and fast, ten minutes ago I couldn't connect to the office PC from one of my XP machines. I tried 4 times and just got a Cannot connect to Remote Computer message (sorry I didn't note the exact message when I was getting it). However, I did up a speetest in between attempts and I was getting 3900kps.

Thanks for any ideas.

Mike

Just a couple of points which may or may not be related to the problem we are having.

Old router - Which was a 2Wire 2700 supplied by our ISP. This held the external IP, the firewall, was disabled and everything was allowed through to our Netgear FVS318 firewall which deals with all our port redirection. The open ports are VPN - 1723, RWW - 4125, HTTPS - 443, SMTP - 25, Server TS - 3389. It also allowed 11 key members of staff/directors connect directly to their desktops without using VPN or RWW.

When this router died, we were told a replacement would take 24 hours to arrive. As we couldn't be down that long, I went to our local PC World and bought a Netgear DG834 adsl modem/router. Unfortunately, unlike the old router, this one is only capable of holding one external IP address out of our range of 5. So I had to input the address reserved for the gateway, 81.x.x.224. Our IP for SMTP (in MX Records) and remote is 81.x.x.219, so the Netgear modem/router 81.x.x.224 points to the Netgear Firewall 81.x.x.219.

Under the Rules of the Modem everything is allowed through and points to 81.x.x.219. Obviously the firewall is disabled on the Modem Router.

Since, the change we are unable to connect directly to the 11 PCs and we are having problems with RWW.

Here is the list of troubleshooting points for this error:  http://www.chicagotech.net/sbs/rwwvbscript11.htm

Based on the router issues, I'm guessing it may be MTU settings. (resolution point 4 in that linked article).

I've made the additions to the registry and set MTU to 3000.
3000??? why?  They shouldn't be set more than 1492.  Where did you get the idea to set it to 3000?

Jeff
TechSoEasy
Miscalculated - have reset to 1492. Thanks
The VPN is now fine on the laptop with MTU changes, but still hit and miss on the others, so I will attempt to talk them through updating their home PC NIC drivers.

Any idea why some of the office PCs can be contacted through RWW and some can't?

NIC drivers.

The NIC drivers have been updated on both sides, home and office PCs and still the same 80% of users cannot connect using RWW.
Can you connect to these workstations internally?  ie, can you go to RWW on the server and connect to a workstation?

Jeff
TechSoEasy
Connecting remotely to server and using an unsecured connection, http://ourserver/remote, I can get to the login screen of all of the workstations.
