Email deliverability and tracking

I've been tasked with finding a way to increase our email deliverability and also track whether or not the email was received.  I've read about the method of adding a .gif to the email to track receipt.  But my guess is adding an image file to the email would then affect deliverability?

We're considering using something like StrongMail, but this is a very expensive solution.  Does anyone know of a reliable way track email receipt without affecting deliverability?

First are you running Exchange Server or is it a POP3/SMTP setup?

We use IMail and yes, it's POP3/SMTP.  I'm a rookie when it comes to email. :D
Are you using Outlook? If so Have you thought about turning on the Delivery and Read Receipts that is built into Outlook? If not can you supply more info about your typical setup?
We use Outlook on each client.  Our email server uses a product called IMail to send/receive email.  Most of the email we need to track is created within our classic asp code using a 3rd party app called "aspemail."  Even if aspemail had a "confirmread" method, that wouldn't be accurate.  Many people do not allow or acknowledge read receipts.

From what I have been able to find, it seems these services that exist that track deliverability probably use a hidden .gif file.  However, I don't understand how that can be accurate either since some email apps (like Outlook) can be set to automatically block images.  Some companies also set their spam filters to block any email with images.

I'm not sure an accurate way to track deliverability actually exists.
My first suggestion is to take a look at ReadNotify.com
http://www.readnotify.com/

See if it falls into your budget and I'd contact them with any questions. They also have a two week trial or 25 emails. Definitely worth trying before buying.
This isn't quite the information I was seeking, but thanks for trying.
We use a delivery package where we are but it runs pretty expensive. I wish I could be of more assistance but honestly I know little to nothing about IMail and aspemail. Good luck on your research.
Yeah...the pres. is actually considering StrongMail which is anywhere from $20K to $40K.  Of course he wants advice as to what to do, but we're programmers, not email experts.  We have a small team so we get to wear all IT hats.  ugh

Thanks anyway!
