Solved: Removed Vista partition with Acronis, XP won't boot, drive letters changed
I would like to cancel this question, as I've solved it, but I don't see the option for this. :)
-----
Background: I used to run Vista on my desktop, for a good year or so. It was a multiboot with XP and Ubuntu. Months ago, I stopped using Vista on the desktop, for performance reasons. Today, using Acronis Disk Director, I decided to erase the Vista partition, and resize the XP partition to use that space.
On boot, Ubuntu's grub gave an error 12 (I believe), so, I used <something> to reinstall the regular Windows boot info; I had tried to use the XP CD Recovery Console option, however, it would not accept the administrator password. In any event, grub was replaced with the usual Windows bootloader...
XP still wouldn't boot, so I loaded Acronis up only to find out that all of my drive letters have been changed. C is now G, H is F, I is E, S is C, and Z is D. The "Change letter" option in Acronis Disk Director was greyed out.
After submitting my question, I rebooted and tried Acronis again. Now the C drive is properly assigned, although the other drives are not and cannot be changed. I needed to reinstall the BOOTLDR files... Tried to use the XP repair option, but couldn't figure out the Administrator password, so I cleared the password. Used Recovery Console to copy NTLDR and NTDETECT back to C:\... OS booted, Acronis ran and rebooted the OS a few times, I suspect it was the one that changed the drive letters around in the first place...
Used XP's drive manager to correct the other drive letters; all is well.
