We are starting a slow migration to Windows Server 2008 and I am having trouble access file shares on our test servers using an alias.

We have created a DNS CNAME record for SERVER1 as ALIAS and are trying to access \\ALIAES\SHARE and receiving the following error message:

"Windows cannot find \\ALIAS\SHARE. Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking the Start button and then clicking Search"

We can still access the same share using the actual server name (\\SERVER\SHARE) without any problems.

I have been able to use this for our Windows Server 2003 boxes by disabling the StrictNameChecking registry entry per the KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281308

Has anyone tried this registry hack on a Win2008 box yet?
Should I be looking at the OptionalNames registry entry instead?

Any advise would be helpful.

Thank you in advance.

I have been hesitant to made this same modification to the Windows Server 2008 box because I cannot find any reference that this problem affects this version.
