Open an attached msg file

A collegue often gets mails that have another mail attached. The format is always .msg. Despite we cannot read that file. When trying to open them a new Outllok window will pop up which is blank, like when composing a new mail. Now when i open the mail with word i can see symbols, so there should be something inside. How can i find out how this messages are formatted or how can we read them?

Try to save on local disk .msg file and open it as a regular file. Which version of Outlook you use? Does the msg file are in the same version or in Outlook created?
Compare the size of created .msg file with the .msg file which you receive. If the difference is big then really received file contains something.
Just now I create and .msg file (10Kb size on disk with signature) and openned one .msg file in notepad The body of mail are visible so I can see the signature. Also if there is an attachement you can see what file is it (i.e. ZIP, DOC, etc)

We use Outlook 2007 in an Exchange enviroment. (server 2003). The msg files are quite large (7 -300 KB). I dont know what the sender was using and which version the msg files have. But when i open the files with notepad i see that its not empty.
When open .msg file with notepad or word did you see anywhere some text? (This should be the body of message). Did you try to save these message and open on another computer? Do you have some anti-malware software which can block the content?
I opened it with Word and notepad. In both I see only encrypted symbols, some line brakes and Newline Symbols. I doesnt matter what Text encoding i choose in Word. I opended it on 2 Computers. On those 2 computer there are different anti mal ware which i also deactivated.
Save the file to Desktop, Open with Internet Explorer
If i try open it with the IE 7 it will ask to eitehr open ist or saveit . When open ith it will redirect it to Outlook.
And when selecting Open, can you see the contents?
Do you have Office 2007 SP1 installed:

Is Cached Exchange mode is being used?
I already tried to convert the msg into a txt file, which is empty and has only the Header in it. This is really strange, as when i open the file i see a lot of symbols. Could it be that it is somehow in another format which is not standard?
