Import contact into Outlook 2007, problem !
A friend needs to transfer contacts from his old PC running Outlook Express into his new machine running now Outlook 2007
In Outlook Express, the only possibility was to export in CSV (the other format is Exchange and requires an Exchange server or something like that !)
So we did
Then we took the file on his new machine
In Outlook 2007, we found the menu to import CSV files, selected the file, the destination (contacts) but Outlook presented a menu to define fields etc...
I understood that Outlook 2007 wanted commas between fields, but the file containing semi-colon !
So first I changed with notepad all ; to , and tried again
This time Outlook didn't ask anything else and processed 259 items ... the 259 contacts.
No error, no warning, ...
We then looked into the Contacts ... EMPTY !
Help !

In Outlook right click on Contacts and select Properties, go to the Outlook Address Book tabpage and tick the box saying "Show this folder as an Outlook Address book"

It is already that setting, ormerodrutter !
The address book is really empty
The address book is really empty
A silly question to ask :- did you import them into the right place? Try do it again making sure you select the Contacts folder.
ASKER
Yes, at the right place in theory (I will double-check)
Did it ask you to say which fields in the csv file shuld be matched to the fields in the contacts?
What fields do you have in the CSV file... ie first name, last name, company name, email1address etc.?
If it puts the data in the wrong fields it may set up loads of blank contacts.
When you say EMPTY - do you mean no contacts, or it imported the contacts and they were empty?
It sound to me like you didn't get to the end of the process. Make sure before you press finsih that you have completed the section 'Map Custom Fields' which helps you tell Outlook which of your CSV fields to import into which Outlook contact field.

It did not ask to map
I don't know if there are empty addresses or no address at all
I will check this when back at home

I verified what Outlook did with these 200 imported addresses
It imported spaces in 200 contacts !
I have indeed now 200 empty contacts, really empty !
My Outlook 2007 is a french version (I am from Belgium)
Now what I did was to create a few addresses manually and export them all with all fields in a CSV
Based on what I saw in the CSV file, I modified manually the CSV I have to import and imported it
It took me several cycles because the import is BUGGY !
For example, the "First Name" column was not imported !
But using the "Name" column, it imported correctly and also parsed the Name to take the "First Name" from it
Completely crazy !

I finally did it manually. Even the map (french version) is buggy
